You should exchange your foreign driver's license within one year of the date of entry into Switzerland. Early applications are recommended as formalities might extend the waiting period in select cases. The driving authorization with the foreign driver's license expires after one year. It is important that you do not drive in Switzerland after the expiry of the exchange period.
However, you can exchange the foreign driver's license at any time after this year has expired. If your registration took place after the first year of residence in Switzerland, you will have to absolve that driving examination („Kontrollfahrt“) within the space of three months. The driving examination is performed with automatic transmission. With the Swiss driver's license you can also drive cars with manual transmission.
Important: You cannot repeat this practical exam („Kontrollfahrt“). If you fail you will have to start all over again!
If you are a resident of Switzerland and obtained your driver's license abroad, the following rule applies: Driving licenses obtained abroad are only accepted if you have been living there for at least 12 months. The stay must be proven with official documents.
